this one was the most promising
Dear so and so
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for increased funding to protect endangered species and critical habitats. I share your concern about these issues, and I agree with you that the protection of wildlife and wild spaces is crucial to our national and global well-being.
Protecting wildlife and wilderness areas is a critical issue and I have long supported legislation to defend threatened animals and habitats. I voted in support of the FY10 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations bill which designated more than $16 million for neotropical migratory bird conservation and the multispecies conservation fund. I am pleased to report this bill was signed by the president and is now law.
I also voted in support of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, which included a provision to overturn changes made to the Endangered Species Action by the Bush Administration that would have weakened the law. Since it was enacted in 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has protected hundreds of species from extinction and, as conservationists point out, the Endangered Species Act protects not just the endangered species it covers, but many other species, too. In addition, this bill designated more than 2 million acres of wilderness, added over 1,000 miles to the National Wild and Scenic River system and protects numerous historic and heritage areas of the United States.
I am also a cosponsor of several bills which would protect our wilderness areas including: S. 799, America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, legislation that would protect over 9 million acres of land in Utah by designating them as part of the National Wildlife Preservation System; and S.1738, the Roadless Area Conservation Act, which would prohibit road construction in roadless areas of the National Forest System.
Although I am proud of the accomplishments we have made on behalf of our environment, I am aware that there are still many threatened species and habitats needing protection. I remain strongly committed to protecting endangered species for future generations.
Again, thank you for contacting me on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of further assistance on this or any other matter.
Sincerely,
Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator
At least there is somebody in Washington making an attempt. i cant even TELL you how pissed and horrified i was when Bush altered the endangered species act. to have these laws in place and protected from morons is EXTREMELY important. these laws dont just 'protect cute fuzzy animals' as some conservative might think. protecting the environment protects US ALL. we NEED fresh water, air and food. we NEED protected forests to make air, and house wildlife. we NEED clean rivers and ocean, so our FOOD supply isnt full of toxins. its not a 'fruity liberal thing' its a SURVIVAL thing.
and who wants to live in a world with no forests and animals? i sure as hell dont
