Kingdom Come, Deliverance
been waiting for this game for a few years now and it finally released (yay) so ive been playing it for a few days now.
its a really spectacular game but its got some issues
combat is terrible. awkward, clunky, not intuitive at all and definitely not fun. melee is a nightmare of dodge, push the button at exactly the right time or NOPE you died.
archery isnt any better. the fucking arrow swings around like the character is drunk. who holds a bow like this? sure as shit not me. couldn't hit a dam tree let alone a movie target.
luckily, the game allows you to more or less avoid combat and advance the story, if you are clever at it. so far, ive been in maybe one skirmish. (that i survived) i spent at least my first 3 (real life) days just waiting for the (in game) day i would finally get a horse. i loooove horses :)
i finally do get my horse, and my disappointment in the game continues. steering your horse is, like one fellow put it, like steering a locomotive. when you are just walking the horse joggles back and forth and wont walk straight. when you are galloping, you can barely steer the thing and you crash into trees. who the fuck thinks horses work like this? ive ridden real horses, buddy, they sure as shit dont. and the movement and handling is so jerky and unnatural it give me motion sickness.
so the two very basic elements of what should have been a wonderful medieval simulator (combat and horsemanship) are absolutely terrible. and if that wasnt bad enough, the controller doesnt always do what its supposed to do. the button that is supposed to do x, does y, for some inexplicable reason, and i cant change it. for half the game i was using one button for running, now it doesn't run anymore, and it takes out my weapon. and the jump button NEVER worked. and you cant even save the damn game if you are about to do something risky. it auto saves at certain points or you need a special potion that gets you drunk. if you dont sleep or use a drunk potion, gotta do your entire day again...
aside from those things. the game is amazing. i mean, i love it. its so beautiful, and addictive. the world is pretty big, and you get really sucked into it. the character, Henry, is likable and easy to relate to. i have spent literally hours just walking around, talking to villagers and enjoying the scenery. its like walking into a movie set (or back in time.) it feels really authentic and looks real. im glad i can get by without combat. because i want to keep playing and enjoying this world.
there is no in game way to take screenshots that im aware of, so i dont have any pics :(
but i do have an amusing story. i was sent to find an item that a trader was supposed to deliver. i stumbled across his remains near a river and two brigands were robbing him. after trying (unsuccessfully) to fight them, i implored a different strategy. there was a monastery and village somewhat nearby. so instead of engaging these brutes in mortal combat, i instead aggro them and waked my horse quite slowly to the monastery. just fast enough to not get too many arrows up my ass, but slow enough for them to continue following me.
it worked, and the brigands made chase, yelling witty things like 'is that all you got!' and 'im going to enjoy this!' as i casually trotted down the road. when i approached the monastery, the guards took notice of the fellows on my tail and immediately dispatched them for me.. huzzah!
i picked their bodies clean and now im several monies richer. (and unscathed)
im afraid one day tho ill be forced to endure a story driven fight that i cant escape, and then what will i do? lol
